First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio has launched the Sierra Leone Film Industry Labour and Marketing Guild (SL Film Guild) National Strategic Development Plan 2026–2030, calling for increased investment and growth in the country’s creative sector.

She described the film industry as both a cultural and economic driver, saying it plays an important role in national development, especially for young people.

“As a former actress, scriptwriter, and storyteller, I understand the importance of this sector to individuals and to the nation’s economy,” she said.

She noted that despite the availability of talent, the industry continues to face challenges including limited opportunities, coordination gaps, and issues around professional standards.

“To policymakers and development partners, I urge you to invest in this sector and create opportunities for young people in the film industry,” she said.

The First Lady also called on filmmakers to focus on telling local stories that reflect Sierra Leone’s history, culture, and the experiences of women and youth.

“To filmmakers, I implore you to produce scripts that tell stories about our history and cultural heritage, stories about African women and youth, and stories that build the future of our country,” she added.

She encouraged creatives to remain committed to their craft and ensure Sierra Leonean stories are told by Sierra Leoneans themselves.

“Keep believing in your dreams and don’t allow others to tell our stories,” she said.

Dr. Fatima Maada Bio also pledged support for the industry, announcing plans to fund outstanding film scripts that reflect local narratives.

“Going forward, I am committed to fully funding the best script from filmmakers — a script that tells our own stories,” she said.

The strategic plan is expected to guide the development of the film industry from 2026 to 2030, focusing on growth, professionalisation, and job creation in the creative sector.
