28 Children in Bombali Affected by Unexplained Skin Lesions: Health Authorities Respond

The National Public Health Agency (NPHA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has responded to reports of unexplained skin lesions affecting 28 school-going children aged 15 to 17 in Safroko-Limba Chiefdom, Bombali District.

A rapid response team comprising epidemiologists, infection prevention and control experts, and laboratory scientists from both district and national levels has been deployed to the community to investigate the cause of the symptoms.

The team is conducting a comprehensive assessment, which includes identifying suspected cases, tracing close contacts, implementing immediate infection prevention and control measures, and collecting samples for urgent laboratory testing in Freetown. These measures are intended to limit potential transmission and determine the underlying cause of the skin lesions.

The NPHA has urged the public to remain calm and vigilant. Parents, caregivers, and community members are encouraged to report any unusual skin conditions especially in children and adolescents to the nearest health facility or through the toll-free line 117.

Authorities advised against self-medication or the use of traditional remedies for unfamiliar skin conditions, emphasizing that early reporting and proper medical care are crucial for effective management.

While laboratory results are still pending, the agency assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to investigate, manage, and contain the situation. Communities have been urged to cooperate fully with health teams and follow any public health guidance that will be issued in the coming days.
