HRCSL Launches Probe Into Kailahun Police–Bike Riders Clash

The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), Eastern Regional Office, has launched a fact-finding mission following a violent confrontation between officers of the Sierra Leone Police and members of the Kailahun District Bike Riders Union.
The incident occurred on 24 June 2026 in Kailahun Township along the Pendembu Highway and reportedly resulted in the death of a Bike Riders Union member, Abdul Kallon. The confrontation also caused damage to the Kailahun Police Barracks during the unrest.
The Sierra Leone Police have confirmed the arrest of 26 suspects in connection with the incident, including three police officers, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the violence.
HRCSL said its monitoring team is currently on the ground assessing the situation to establish the facts behind the confrontation and ensure due process is followed.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring that investigations are conducted promptly, independently, and thoroughly in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
It further emphasized that every individual has the right to life, due process, and protection from the unlawful use of force.
HRCSL also pledged to continue engaging relevant authorities to promote accountability, uphold the rule of law, and protect the rights of all persons affected by the incident.
The situation in Kailahun remains under investigation, with authorities yet to provide further details on what triggered the confrontation.
