John Oponjo Benjamin (JOB), former National Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), has urged the party to rise above factionalism and tribal politics, stating that movements such as “Ebema” must disappear.
Speaking during a public interview on AYV’s Wake Up Sierra Leone, JOB said the SLPP should prioritize national interest over personal or tribal considerations, warning that political parties should not be built along ethnic lines. He stressed that tribalism has no place in politics, which should serve the collective good of the country.
“Things like Ebema must disappear. Politics should be for the benefit of Sierra Leone,” he said.
Addressing concerns about internal party dynamics, the former chairman emphasized that the SLPP is not for sale and called on party members, particularly public office holders, to remain focused on their official responsibilities. “If you are a sitting minister, focus on your work as a minister and allow the party’s internal politics to flow. What is for sure is that, when the time comes, we will clean the party,” he added.
His remarks come amid growing public debate about the influence of the “Ebema” movement, a faction reportedly associated with First Lady Fatima Maada Bio. Political analysts warn that such movements, if left unchecked, could deepen tribal divisions and factionalism within political parties.
By speaking out, JOB has positioned himself as a voice of caution and unity within the SLPP, calling on members to uphold the party’s core values and prioritize the broader national interest over personal or ethnic agendas.
