Journalist Thomas Dixon Criticizes Bio Administration Over Worsening Poverty and Hunger

Journalist and social commentator Thomas Dixon has criticized President Julius Maada Bio’s government, arguing that despite the 2018 campaign slogan “Tolongbo nor go Sidon Ya, Angri Borku,” hunger and poverty in Sierra Leone have worsened.

He cited a recent World Bank report highlighting growing gaps in the country’s food sufficiency.

Speaking in an online media interview, Dixon said that despite campaign promises, poverty levels have continued to rise while the government’s approach to food security remains inadequate.

He also questioned government spending on foreign trips, referencing funds used by the President to attend a graduation ceremony in Nigeria and a condolence visit to Ghana. Dixon suggested that such resources could have been redirected to the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) to support low-income families and strengthen social protection programs.

With two years remaining in President Bio’s tenure, Dixon said the administration still has a critical window to make meaningful progress. He warned that the growing disconnect between campaign promises and the current reality risks leaving little for Sierra Leoneans to remember positively.

Dixon’s remarks come amid increasing public concern over living conditions, as Sierra Leone continues to face challenges in ensuring adequate food access and economic stability for its citizens.
