NDLEA Director Flags Lack of Resources Amid Growing Drug Crisis

Ibrahim Samuel Dugba, Director of Drug Prevention, Education and Training at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has raised serious concerns over the agency’s capacity to tackle the country’s escalating drug crisis.

Speaking on a recent media program, Dugba revealed that despite the President’s declaration of a public health emergency on drug abuse, the NDLEA continues to operate with minimal resources. He disclosed that the agency does not have a single vehicle, making it extremely difficult to reach provinces or respond promptly to reports of drug activity.

“As a result, the NDLEA often depends on support from other law enforcement agencies, yet we still face daily obstacles that hinder our work,” Dugba said.

He further highlighted that the agency’s budget remains very low, limiting its ability to run rehabilitation programs, conduct awareness campaigns, and reach communities most in need.

Staffing is another major challenge. The NDLEA currently has only 24 staff members, including the Executive Director. Dugba explained that many employees have resigned without notice, leaving the remaining team overstretched. Although a request has been made for new recruitment, no progress has been reported so far.

Despite these hurdles, Dugba affirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to addressing the drug problem. “With adequate tools, staff, and financial support, we can reach every part of the country and respond to the drug crisis more effectively and consistently,” he said.
