Opposition Leader Questions Suitability of ECSL Boss for 2028 Elections

The Opposition Leader in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has raised concerns over the leadership of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone), stating that it would be preferable if Commissioner Edmond Sylvester Alpha does not preside over the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Liberty Online TV, Hon. Kargbo linked his remarks to ongoing electoral reform discussions and the proposed restructuring of ECSL under the Agreement for National Unity framework.

He explained that the planned restructuring of the Commission by December 31 would involve the establishment of a search and nomination committee to select commissioners and senior officials. However, he noted that the process is dependent on the passage of an amendment bill currently before Parliament.

Hon. Kargbo stressed that if the amendment is approved, all stakeholders must remain committed to its full implementation.

The Opposition Leader argued that elections in Sierra Leone are often characterised by public suspicion and political tension, making it essential to ensure leadership that commands trust and confidence.

He further stated that retaining the current Commissioner for future electoral cycles could raise concerns about the credibility of the process.

“It would be good for the country generally if Edmond Alpha does not take us into 2028,” he said.

Hon. Kargbo also suggested that individuals previously associated with disputed or controversial electoral outcomes could undermine public confidence if retained in key positions within the electoral management system.

His comments come in the aftermath of continued political consultations following the recent visit of International Moral Guarantors, who engaged stakeholders on electoral reforms, governance, and political dialogue.

Despite these engagements, opposition figures continue to express concerns over electoral management and the implementation of proposed reforms ahead of the 2028 general elections.
