Opposition Urges Supreme Court to Release Lawyer Joseph Kamara

The Parliamentary Opposition of Sierra Leone has requested the Supreme Court to reconsider the detention of prominent attorney Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, widely known as "JFK." Kamara was detained following an altercation with the Chief Justice during a high-profile hearing concerning the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill 2025.
In a statement signed by Minority Leader Abdul Kargbo, the Opposition highlighted that Kamara has tendered a formal apology. The caucus urged the judiciary to accept the apology and order his immediate release, allowing proceedings on the constitutional amendment challenge to resume without further delay.
"We respectfully call on the Supreme Court to reconsider his continued detention, give due consideration to the apology he tendered, and order his release," the statement read.
While acknowledging the court's authority and the professional obligation of legal counsel to maintain courtroom decorum, the Opposition emphasized that attorneys must be permitted to represent their clients firmly and independently within the bounds of the law.
"Upholding both principles is essential to the fair administration of justice," the release noted, adding that resolving the impasse would preserve judicial dignity while ensuring attention remains focused on the critical constitutional issues at hand.
The pending legal challenge carries significant ramifications for democratic accountability and constitutional governance across the nation. The Opposition stressed that all participating parties deserve an impartial hearing and an equal opportunity to present their arguments before the court.
Expressing solidarity with Kamara and his family, the parliamentary block aligned itself with broader calls from members of the legal community advocating for his prompt release.
Reaffirming its dedication to judicial independence, democratic norms, and peaceful resolution mechanisms, the Opposition appealed to the public and its supporters to maintain calm and voice their concerns responsibly.
"We appeal for restraint, fairness, and a timely resolution of this matter," the statement concluded.
