Osman I. Kanu Sworn in as Sierra Leone’s New Solicitor-General

President Julius Maada Bio has presided over the oath-taking ceremony of Mr. Osman I. Kanu, Esq., following his appointment as Solicitor-General of Sierra Leone.

The ceremony took place at State House in Freetown on Thursday, 25th June 2026, officially marking the start of his duties as the country’s second-highest legal officer within the Attorney General’s Office.

Secretary to the President, Mr. Baba Fortune, cited Section 65(2) of the 1991 Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint the Solicitor-General, noting that the oath-taking is a constitutional requirement for assuming office.

He added that the appointment confirms Mr. Kanu’s readiness to serve.

In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Kanu thanked President Bio for the trust placed in him, describing the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility. He noted that the ceremony coincided with the Day of Arafah and the Day of Ashura, which he said served as a reminder of faith, service, and accountability.

He pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic governance, and improve access to justice, particularly for vulnerable groups. With over 22 years of experience in the Law Officers’ Department, he has served in several senior roles, including State Counsel, Head of the Civil Division, and Director of Public Prosecutions (2023–2026).

President Bio congratulated the new Solicitor-General and expressed confidence in his experience and leadership, saying his appointment would strengthen the effectiveness of the Attorney General’s Office and enhance justice delivery.

The appointment forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s justice sector and reinforce government commitment to accountability, rule of law, and effective public service delivery.
