Sierra Leone Emerges 8th Safest Nation in Africa Report

Sierra Leone has been ranked the 8th safest country in Africa in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), according to the latest global peace and security report.

The index, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, ranks Mauritius as the safest country in Africa, placing it 18th globally with a score of 1.586.

Equatorial Guinea follows in second place on the continent, ranking 38th globally with a score of 1.720, while Botswana holds third position in Africa and 50th globally with a score of 1.823.

The Gambia is ranked fourth in Africa (56th globally, 1.837), followed by Madagascar in fifth place (59th globally, 1.849).

Namibia occupies sixth position in Africa, ranking 63rd globally with a score of 1.872, while Morocco comes seventh (65th globally, 1.887).

Sierra Leone is placed eighth in Africa, ranking 74th globally with a score of 1.937, ahead of Senegal and Ghana.

Senegal ranks ninth on the continent (75th globally, 1.939), with Ghana rounding out the top ten (76th globally, 1.943).

The Global Peace Index assesses countries based on levels of safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarisation to provide a comparative measure of global peace.

The 2026 report highlights relative stability across several African nations, with West African countries featuring prominently among the continent’s most peaceful states.
