On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, convened a high-level consultative meeting with the leadership of the opposition. The primary objective of this engagement was to foster a constructive dialogue aimed at ending the current boycott and facilitating the opposition's return to active parliamentary proceedings.

Hon. Abdul Kargbo, Leader of the Opposition, articulated that the decision to abstain from legislative activities is a direct response to the appointment of Mr. Edmond Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner. The opposition maintains a firm stance that the appointee's involvement in the 2028 electoral cycle compromises the perceived neutrality of the process.

The Speaker formally urged the delegation to prioritize national interest over partisan grievances. He underscored that executive appointments should not serve as a catalyst for legislative stagnation, reminding the representatives of their constitutional mandate to serve the electorate. He further advocated for the use of established democratic and legal channels to address their specific concerns within the framework of the separation of powers.

Furthermore, the Speaker noted that critical constitutional amendments are currently pending. He emphasized the necessity of a full parliamentary quorum to ensure these historic legislative reforms reflect a broad national consensus.

Concluding the session, Speaker Thomas expressed his appreciation for the opposition's participation. He committed to briefing H.E. President Julius Maada Bio on the deliberations to explore a comprehensive, multi-branch resolution to the current political impasse.

This diplomatic outreach marks a significant milestone in reinforcing Sierra Leone's parliamentary democracy. The Speaker's proactive mediation highlights a dedication to inclusive governance and the promotion of bipartisan cooperation.

Political analysts suggest that this dialogue may provide the necessary groundwork for a formal reconciliation, potentially leading to a more collaborative legislative environment to address the nation's pressing governance priorities.
