  • Mogbwemo Queens Defeat Sierra Leone Female All Stars in a Friendly Encounter

    Mogbwemo Queens, the champions of the first ever Female Premier League in Sierra Leone, defeated Sierra Leone Female All Stars 1-0 in a friendly match on Saturday at the Koidu town Field in Kono District. The match was a workout for Sierra Leone's upcoming Olympic qualifiers against Ivory Coast from the 10-18 July 2023 in a doubleheader fashion. The winner for both legs will face Tunisia in the 2nd round of the qualifiers. The match was a close contest, with both teams creating chances. Mogbwemo Queens eventually won the match thanks to a goal from M. Barrie in the 78th minute. Barrie got past the defenders on the left flank and fired a low shot past the goalkeeper. The match was played in front of a large crowd of fans, who were treated to a hard-fought contest. The weather conditions were calmly conducive, as both teams played with energy and determination. The coaches of both teams expressed their pleasures with the performance of their players. Adama Suma , the coach of Mogbwemo Queens, said that she was happy with the way her team played, and she was confident that her players are ready to retain their championship if a date were to be announced tomorrow. Hassan Malik Mansaray, the coach of Sierra Leone Female All Stars, said that his team was disappointed with the loss, but he was proud of the way they played.     The National Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone Mohamed Konneh has announced the results of the just concluded 2023 Mayoral elections, showing that Madam Yvonne Aki Sawyerr, recently exited as Mayor of the Freetown City Council, representing the All People's Congress party, to be the winner. The results announced declared Yvonne Denise Aki Sawyerr with 288,693 totaling 51.3% of votes and therefore the reelected Mayor of Freetown and competitor Mohamed Gento Kamara of the Sierra Leone People's Party with 268,213 totaling 48%. The results were announced today at the Freetown International Conference centre.

    The Sierra Leone Premier League has been on hiatus since the general elections but they are set to resume on July 1-2 2023, with important matches scheduled. Bo Rangers who are currently leading the table with 69 points, a total of 11 points ahead of second place holders FC Kallon, after 29 matches played, will Face Wusum Stars. Bo Rangers have been in good form recently ,winning their last four matches. Wusum Stars are fighting fit in the League and have a good chance of winning the said fixture. Whilst, second place holders FC Kallon with 58 points, are looking to extend their winning ways against Luawa FC at the Angola Field. The derby Match between East End Lions and Mighty Blackpool is also sure to be a cracker. Fc Johansen and Wilberforce Strikers who are in danger Zone, will face each other at the Angola Field on the 1 July 2023 , Bai Bureh Warriors entertain the Citizens from Freetown City Council at the Port Loko field 1 July , 2023 , Lamboi Fc in Lungi hosts Old Edwardians on the 1 July 2023 at the Lungi Central Field and Freetonians SLIFA meets East End Tigers at the Parade Field to end the July 1 Matches on Saturday. In Kono, Diamond Stars will host Real Republicans at the Kono Field on July 2, 2023. Kamboi Eagles will welcome the Water Front Boys Ports Authority at the Kenema Town Field. Meanwhile, current holders Bo Rangers will take on Wusum Stars at the Bo Mini Stadium. Freetown's derby between East End Lions and Mighty Blackpool will take place at the Trade Centre Playing Field as third and fourth teams go toe-to-toe. At the Angola Field, FC Kallon will host Luawa FC to give the fans in that part of the country a taste of the League.     The Sierra Leone national football team has dropped to 120th in the FIFA world rankings, a three-place drop from their previous ranking of 117th in April 2023. The team has been on a downward trend for almost twenty years, their last highest ranking being 88th in 2003. There are a number of factors that have contributed to the team's decline, including a lack of investment in youth development, a shortage of qualified coaches, and a lack of competitive matches. With recent changes made by the Sierra Leone Football Association,such as the hiring of new coaches, training of others, increased funding to football activities creating the possibility of more participation in competitive games and more, it is hoped that these will improve the national team's performance and standing. It will take time for these changes to take effect, but there is reason to believe that with hard work and dedication, they could eventually reach the top 100.

The song was produced by the talented Saraya, who had collabed on Jay Mane's other popular song "What's my name" Days before Sierra Leone’s election, the rapper who had taken a break from music due to familial and other obligations had casually dropped a song titled “tin don be”, a lyrically fully relatable easy going rap sound. The song has shot to the top of many individual playlists to become one of the most trending sounds on new generation’s most visited social media platform, tiktok. In less than a week, the song has amassed close to five thousand (5,000) videos on the said platform. This warm reception had prompted the release of the full song and in eight days, has over five thousand (5,000) plays on audiomack.     South Carolina United has won the Mid Atlantic Premier Conference League championship, after defeating Soda City Fc in the final. Sierra Leonean-born Ibrahim Conteh proved himself instrumental in the team's victory, helping them to clinch this title. Conteh was the team's leading contributor during the regular season, and he was earlier on in the season named the team's brightest prospect. South Carolina United, winning this championship in its third season, has carved themselves a spot in the league of teams doing amazing work. The team has quickly become one of the top clubs in the Mid Atlantic region, and it is poised to challenge for the title again next season. Ibrahim Conteh is a rising star in the soccer world, and his performance in the championship final was a testament to his improving skill enhancing his natural talent.     Sierra Leonean arm wrestler Alfred Cauker has won Gold in the 12th African Armwrestling Championship at the GNAT Hall in Accra, Ghana. Cauker, who competed in the 75kg weight class, defeated top arm wrestlers from across Africa to claim the title. Cauker's victory is a major achievement for Sierra Leone, which has a relatively small arm wrestling community. His win has helped to raise the profile of the sport in the country, and it is hoped that it will inspire more people to take up armwrestling. "I am very proud of my achievement," said Cauker. "I worked hard for this, and it feels great to be able to represent my country and bring home the gold medal." Egypt, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Cameroon, Benin, Madagascar, Togo, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Chad, Gabon and Ghana are the other countries completing the list of Fourteen African countries, with Sierra Leone.   • Basketball: Freetown Lakers Basketball Academy Turns Attention to Women's Basketball

    Basketball, mainly regarded as a male-dominated sport in Sierra Leone, is experiencing monumental changes and the Freetown Lakers Basketball Academy is a big part of that change. The Academy has been a driving force in the growth of women's basketball in the country, and has organized a competition, between mothers and daughters, played together on the Sierra Panthers team. The Academy's founder, Patrick Sundufu , announced his commitment to providing opportunities for women to play basketball competitively and lucratively. "We believe that women's basketball is just as important as men's basketball. We want to give women the chance to showcase their skills and to achieve their dreams." This notion seems to have been rewarded with success. The Sierra Panthers team won the recent competition, and several of the team's players are now gracing externally competed games, big time. The academy's work is helping to break down gender stereotypes and to create more opportunities for both genders within and out of Sierra Leone.

    The National Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone Mohamed Konneh has announced the results of the just concluded 2023 Presidential elections, showing incumbent President Bio of the Sierra Leone People’s party to be a lead winner. The results announced declared H.E Bio of the Sierra Leone People's Party with 1,566,932, totally 56.17% of votes and Dr. Samura Kamara of the All People's Congress, Samura Wilson Kamara with 1,148,262 votes totallying 41.16%.

  • Commonwealth: Observation Report

    The Commonwealth Observer mission, the African Union Election Observation Mission and the ECOWAS election Observers held a joint press conference today Monday 26th June, to present their preliminary findings relating to the June 25th elections conducted. In the nine pager document, the immediate past Vice President of Nigeria Prof. Yemi Osinbago, leading the Commonwealth, outlined among other concerns, the observation that there is a lack of clarity around the actual tallying process, leading to accusations of lack of transparency. The group notes that further observation will inform their final report but urge the electoral commission to exercise maximum transparency and publish tabulated results to allow for cross verification and better acceptance of the result. The group expressed their concern over the announcement of election results from political parties and appealed to all political parties and supporters to allow the electoral commission to execute their full mandate, as the only authorized results declaring body. The group included findings before and during the election day and recommendations for future conduct of elections, especially on voter education and transparency.

    The Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone has released a breakdown of the 60% partial results of the just concluded 2023 Presidential elections announced. The result announced had shown incumbent President Bio of the Sierra Leone People’s party to be in a lead but the locations these results had been generated from, were heavily debated. However, sources within the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, explained that the first released tallied results are 60% of total polling stations within each district. The stations are not specified except by the total number within that district. Citizens are reminded that these results are cleared by Mr. Konneh from regional offices, with forty percent (40%) of tallied results for these sixteen districts yet to be announced.

    The National Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone Mohamed Konneh has announced partial results of the just concluded 2023 Presidential elections, showing incumbent President Bio of the Sierra Leone People’s party to be in a lead. In the announced elections, a total of 60% of polling stations, shows President Bio has amassed one million, sixty seven thousand, six hundred and sixty six (1,067,666) compared to that of the All People’s Congress party’s Dr. Samura Kamara’s seven hundred and ninety three thousand, seven hundred and fifty one(793,751). Other Presidential candidates scored between hundred or thousands but all below ten thousand, with the exception of National Democratic Alliance’s Presidential candidate, Mohamed Chernor Bah amassing fourteen thousand, eight hundred and twenty nine. Citizens are reminded that these results have been cleared by Mr. Konneh and regional offices from Bo, Kenema, Makeni and Port Loko, with more tallied results, yet to be announced.
