  • Sierra Leone handball team prepare for match in Mali

    The Sierra Leone Handball Association say they are preparing for Mali Handball challenge trophy. Speaking, the Treasurer of the Sierra Leone Handball Association Hassan Munu, says that the handing body in Sierra Leone is currently having an intensive training sessions for female players at the Old School training centre ahead of the Handball Challenge Trophy expected to stage in Mali this month. He continued that the players are technically positioned by the technical team to upset teams in Mali and also improve the status of the country in so far as Handball is concerned on the continent. He explained that barring financial difficulties, the team will be present and performing in the challenge, with hopes of very impactful points and experience. Meanwhile, the players who were present during the session at the Old School centre demonstrated their commitment to learn and a spark a winning mentality in the camp. In respect to the question of qualification, Munu revealed to this medium that the competition is Mali is essentially to the Handball team and the nation as a whole.

  • Arch rivals East End Lions and Ports Authority to start off Sierra Leone Premier League Second round

    The Sierra Leone Premier League Board has announced fixtures for the second round of the League commencing on Friday April 14 and rivals East End Lions and Ports Authority will play first at the Trade Centre playing field in the East End of Freetown. Ardent Sierra Leone football supporter aware of the intense rivalry between East End Lions and Ports Authority have increased the momentum, ahead of the Second round League Opener. Ports Authority Head Coach Lamin Bangura who designs the football Culture at Ports Authority, the Waterfront Boys and the Former Sierra Leone International defender says he’ll stop at nothing to win it as a coach. With this challenge, East End Lions Interim Coach Raymond Gerald Hunter, has to prevent the bashing of his former boss Francis “Zappa" Koroma who parted ways with the killers after some difficult moment in the League at the time. Meanwhile, in the West End of Freetown newly promoted Real Republicans will host Old Edwardians at the Angola town field, to spark a wonderful start to the Second round as well on Friday. Francis 'Zappa ' Koroma and Ibrahim Sillah were recently appointed by the Club as Head and Assistant Coaches following the departure of Abdulai Kaloga' Bah.

  • FC Kallon's Female club's Captain Binta Bah graduates from IPAM with First Class Degree

    Female football Captain Binta Bah, for FC Kallon has graduated with first Class Honours Degree in Business Administration from the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) University of Sierra Leone. Binta Bah was able to strick a balance between footballing & school , placing her among graduands at the FBC's Amphitheatre during the 2022 Convocation. She is now earmarked among the pool of female Footballers who have darkened the corridors of the higher education. Binta explained that navigating between the two goals was not an easy feat, especially during examinations, thinking of the many difficulties and the challenging nature of the various field of study. She encouraged other female footballers not to relent in pursuing their careers , no matter how challenging the situation can be. She noted that it is never too late for women who wish to empower themselves. She recounted that her greatest challenge was allocating training time as a footballer and at the same time attending classes. She thanked her FC Kallon family and other relatives who supported her goal in ensuring she becomes an example for other female footballers in the country.

  • President Emerita of KDU Madam Cassandra Garber GOOR JP endorse Yvonne Aki-Sawyer’s re-election bid

    Madam Cassandra Garber GOOR JP, President Emerita of the Krio Descendants Union has recently endorsed the re-election agenda of Madam Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr for Freetown and called on all Krios to support her to achieve her goal. She made public her endorsement in a newsletter called the KDY Oracle. This endorsement by Madam Garber GOOR who’s a respected leader and an influential voice in the Krio community is seen as a significant boost to Madam Aki Sawyer's campaign. In her endorsement, Madam Garber GOOR praised Madam Aki Sawyer's “transform Freetown” campaign and states that the Krio community is pleased with the former Mayor’s first term performance. Madam Garber GOOR also emphasized the importance of supporting a leader who understands the needs and aspirations of the Krio community. Madam Aki Sawyer announced her decision to contest for re-election symbolically on International Women’s day on March 8th and over her first tenure had focused on transforming Freetown for a better future for the city and its residents. As the election approaches, Madam Garber GOOR's endorsement is expected to energize and mobilize the Krio community, a huge part of the Freetown population, to support Madam Aki-Sawyer's rerun for the mayor of Freetown.

  • Final list released for 6th edition of 50 most influential women

    The Fifty Most Influential Sierra Leonean Women Awards Committee has released the final list of fifty most influential women in Sierra Leone, out of a hundred names released earlier this year. The award is meant to honor exemplary women that contribute towards community and national development and who are promoting girl child education or served as inspirations to other women in the country within a given year. The award which is an initiative of youths and women led organizations, spotlights women breaking ceilings and barriers in business, Government, Law, Education, NGOs and entertainment. This year's list includes the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone Madam Fatima Bio , Former Electoral Commissioner for Western Region Madam Miatta French, Women’s right Campaigner Madam Fatu Takie, President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association Eddinia Michaela Swallow and Entrepreneur Fatima Sesay. The award slated for 28th April this year at Freetown City hall will for the first time have tradition leaders, specifically Paramount Chiefs honoring award recipients and a special prayer for one of the award recipients who has since died after her nomination, Actress Henrietta Mbawah.

  • Strategic Alliance confirmed, Kandeh Yumkellah of NGC pitches tent with the SLPP camp

    2018 Flagbearer of the National Grand Coalition Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkellah has officially endorsed His Excellency President Maada Bio and Vice President Juldeh Jalloh for re-election in the upcoming June 24th Presidential race. In the late hours of Wednesday 12th April, Dr. Yumkellah took to his official Facebook to announce his aligning with the Sierra Leone’s People Party towards a “brighter future”. He explained that his discussion with the party lasted a yearlong and he is setting aside his personal ambitions in favor of a better Sierra Leone. President Bio in a tweet, stated that the alliance is meant to advance transformation and strengthen coalition. Dr. Yumkellah's decision however concludes the debate as to which party he will be aligning with, after he was being wooed by both the All People's Congress and the Sierra Leone People's party and he had announced few weeks ago that he will be forming a strategic alliance with a political party soon. This announcement had caused an upheaval in his party and prompted discuss as to his returning to his party of origin, the SLPP or the APC.

  • Celebrity Zainab Sheriff's political tirade

    Celebrity Zainab Sheriff has in a recent live video on Facebook, criticized the government and governance system of President Julius Maada Bio. She criticized and accused the President's political party, the Sierra Leone People’s party(SLPP) of tribalism, lack of consideration for citizens, and the high proliferation of harmful drugs in the country. She went on to state that she is still sitting on the fence as to whether she will vote on June 24th general elections, for lack of a situable Presidential candidate. In her words “the APC is not even an option because they don’t have a message and lack leadership.” She furthered that the APC is in disarray and their only aim is to come to power to steal. Zainab Sheriff labeled the 2018 Presidential flag bearer of the National Grand Coalition (NGC) Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkellah as a traitor and a betrayer of the Sierra Leonean people, for either giving up or staying silent. She noted that Dr. Kandeh could have been a strong force of opposition this election even if he didn't win. She concluded by blaming herself and others like her who hadn't recognized the message and agenda of Dr. Yumkellah on his first appearance on the political scene. While some have criticized her comments as being below the belt, others have applauded her for speaking truth to power. Sheriff's comments have sparked a lively debate on social media, with many people expressing their opinions on the state of governance in Sierra Leone. The SLPP has lambasted her video as hypocritical and shortsighted for disregarding the enormous work done by the current government of His Excellency President Bio. The APC says she is uninformed and the live was all about garnering attention. The NGC party questioned her dedication to the truth given her own acknowledgement of faults in disregarding Dr. Yumkellah's message which contributed to his disenchantment of Sierra Leonean politics.

  • SLAAM awards call for nominations for their 8th edition

    The Sierra Leone Association of Artists and Musicians have announced the opening of procedure for their eighth award edition by calling for submissions of nominations. The association made the announcement on 10th April, the date of commencement for nominations. The submission of nominations will last until the 23rd April, 2023. This year brings a lot of changes, including the cutting down of categories, key among them are the categories for best supporting actors and actresses and that of best producer. The association is however introducing a new category, the Best Intl/ Foreign Music. According to the founder of SLAAM, Giileh Kebbie Scholz, the nominations submitted will better informed the final categories put up for awarding. The award slated for 2nd June will be honoring lifetime achievements of Dennis Nelson Streeter and Josephine Kamara among others.

  • SLFA organizing a youth tourney to mark Independence Day

    The Sierra Leone Football Association Youth football Coordinator Alimamy Kurish Conteh has made known his intentions to significantly develop the amateur game through a football festival for both under 13 and 17 teams on 27th April 2023, a date that coincides with the Country's Independence Day at the Murray town field. This he hopes will enhance efforts to promote the development of youngsters in football across the country. According to the Youth Coordinator Alimamy Kurish Conteh, the tourney will create a platform to further streamline the progress of Sierra Leone football with emerging footballers nurtured via several means, one of which might be this event. He went on to say that the future of Sierra Leone football rests with youthful players who possess the zest to excel personally, professionally as part of a unit. He concluded that he is expecting to see the commitment of the under 13 and 17 teams for a successful execution of these expressed goals.

  • SLPP ask government to improve security situation after the assassination of ASP Gbanya

    The Sierra Leone People’s Party in a press release dated 11th April 2023 has condemned the killing of ASP Gbanya by an unknown shooter in Makeni. The party described the killing as a heinous act of violence and calls on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. ASP Martin Moiwah Gbanya, according to the press release, was a dedicated and committed police officer who served his country with honor and distinction. His “untimely death” they noted , is a great loss to the Sierra Leone Police Force and the entire nation. The SLPP urged all Sierra Leoneans to remain calm and cooperate with the police in their efforts to maintain law and order in the country. The Party who's incidentally the ruling party, also calls on the government security apparatuses to take urgent steps to improve the security situation in the country and provide adequate protection for all citizens, especially those in vulnerable communities. The Sierra Leone People’s Party reaffirms its commitment to the rule of law and the protection of human rights, and stands in solidarity with the Sierra Leone Police Force in their efforts to maintain peace and stability in the country. The Party also further called on all political parties and stakeholders to work together in promoting national unity and cohesion, and to reject all forms of violence and extremism. The SLPP expresses its deepest sympathies to the family of ASP Martin Moiwah Gbanya and assures them of its unwavering support during this difficult time.

  • RideAfrique Champion Fatima Deborah Conteh Prepares For Third Edition

    Fatima Deborah Conteh who won the second edition of the RideAfrique Accra Criterium in Ghana on the 16th of April 2022 has begun preparation to retain her title for the top cycling race in Ghana. In readiness to reclaim her championship, Fatima cycles to Aberdeen beach with her colleagues to train and perfect her skills, fully focused on winning the top prize again. Fatima Deborah Conteh is that one Female Cycling Champion who has made a mark in the discipline despite the many challenges she and other athletes face in realizing their aspirations in sport, coming from Sierra Leone. According to her, the notion that cycling is meant for men has to be changed and that is the key reason why she has decided to launch her own Club to advocate for the massive involvement of women in the sport. Fatima rides on the Street of Freetown with huge ambition to attract women who are willing to join the discipline, break new grounds and constantly challenging themselves in a competitive field to do more. Fatima says her vision is to make women’s cycling exciting and inspire women to reach in for the stars. Fatima says she is ready for the RideAfrique Accra Criterion in Ghana this month to give the Ghanaians an unprecedented run for their money.
